Photos: Philippine communities rise from devastation after typhoon

People in the coastal villages of Baras town in the province of Catanduanes, Philippines, have started to rise from the devastation brought by super typhoon “Rolly” (international name: Goni) two weeks after strong winds and heavy rains flattened their communities.

LiCAS.news photographer Vincent Go visited the villages of Agban, JMA, Genitligan, and Benticayan to document the situation of residents who said that they have to rely on themselves in rebuilding their community because they have been “overlooked.”

They said the national government, and even non-government groups, seemed to have “forgotten” them because of lack of media coverage and lack of contact to the outside world.

“Worse, unscrupulous traders took advantage of the situation by jacking up the price of essential goods,” said Go, who arrived in the village on a truck sent by Redemptorist missionaries to bring food, relief goods, and building materials.
