Filipino named as global ambassador of World Evangelical Alliance

Bishop Efraim Tendero, outgoing secretary general of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) International Council, has been named as the organization’s global ambassador.

Bishop Tendero, former national director of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches, described his appointment as “a privilege and solemn responsibility.”

Among his roles will be “explaining, defending, and advancing the evangelical witness” and providing “mentorship to younger leaders” of the global family of 600 million Evangelicals.

The World Evangelical Alliance is a global organization of evangelical Christian churches, serving more than 600 million evangelicals. It was founded in 1846 in London to unite evangelicals worldwide.

In a statement released on February 25, the WEA said Tendero will support the secretary general by representing WEA among alliances, member bodies, and gatherings.

He will also serve as a spokesperson of the organization in national and international conferences on matters of “spiritual and inspirational leadership.”

Bishop Tendero will be the first secretary general to continue serving the WEA in an official capacity.

Since assuming leadership of the WEA in March 2015, Bishop Tendero has worked toward strengthening the organization, especially in regional and national alliances.

“As I hand over the leadership, I believe that the WEA is stronger today than it has ever been,” said the prelate, adding that “there remains much room for growth.”

WEA is the largest international organization of evangelical churches.
