Lipa archdiocese prepares to help people displaced by volcanic activity

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lipa is preparing to provide assistance to evacuees in the wake of reports of recent “volcanic activity” in nearby Taal.

Residents have been evacuated from Taal island on Tuesday, February 16, as a precautionary move due to the reported “slight increased” activity in the volcano.

Father Jayson Siapco of the Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Commission said the archdiocese is ready to provide immediate assistance to the displaced.

“We’re actually expecting for the worst,” said Father Siapco. “We’ll be ready with our stockpiling of goods.”

The volcano unleashed a massive steam-driven explosion in January last year, engulfing nearby towns in ash.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has since lowered the volcano’s alert level.

“But it is very clear to us that the Taal volcano has not erupted yet,” said Father Siapco.
