At least 23 pro-environment activists in the Philippines welcomed, “with reservations,” the finalization this week of the country’s climate commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).
In a statement, the group Aksyon Klima Pilipinas said that while the groups “welcome the higher GHG emissions reductions target, there still remains significant issues and challenges.”
The groups said the draft Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) “continues to resemble a document seemingly focused more on compliance than substance.”
Rodne Galicha, Aksyon Klima Pilipinas national convenor, expressed hope that civil society and other sectors “be given space and voice” in the “planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting processes.”
The climate group is also requesting for the full disclosure of the breakdown of the proposed 75 percent emissions reduction and avoidance, with its conditional and unconditional commitments.
Aksyon Klima Pilipinas urged the government body to assure active participation of the civil society in the advisory board and continue creating an “enabling environment that shall promote broader multi-stakeholder participation which is inclusive and transparent.”
Aksyon Klima Pilipinas continues to serve as a platform of the civil society and communities to work and engage with different sectors and the government to act on the climate crisis towards genuine sustainable development and intergenerational ecological justice.
