The Archdiocese of Manila has announced a “series of events” to welcome the new archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Jose Advincula, next month.
The different events will ensure that different groups and sectors in the archdiocese are given a chance to welcome the new prelate and health protocols are strictly observed.
The solemn installation and Mass for the Cardinal Advincula will be held on Thursday, June 24, at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros.
On the same day, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist while Manila celebrates the 450th anniversary of the founding the city.
Cardinal Advincula will be formally welcomed to Intramuros by the mayor of Manila at the Postigo Gate, which was used exclusively by the archbishops of Manila and governors-general of the Philippines during the Spanish times.
The Mass, which will start at nine o’clock in the morning, will be attended by the bishops of the Philippines, the clergy of the Archdiocese of Manila, the clergy from the Archdiocese of Capiz, government officials, representatives of religious men and women, the Council of the Laity of the Archdiocese of Manila, the family and guests of Cardinal Advincula.
The rite will include the solemn liturgical reception of Cardinal Advincula, the reading of the Apostolic Letter from Pope Francis, the seating at the cathedra, and the renewal of the priestly promises of the clergy of Manila. Cardinal Advincula will deliver the homily, his first preaching as Archbishop of Manila.
On Friday, June 25, at 9:00 in the morning, Cardinal Advincula will preside at a Mass at the Manila Cathedral with the laity of the Archdiocese of Manila. This will include representatives from the parishes, organizations, movements, and young people.
On Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 5:00 in the afternoon, Cardinal Advincula will preside at a Solemn Vespers (Evening Prayer) with the consecrated men and women in the Archdiocese of Manila. This will also be held at the Manila Cathedral.
On Sunday, June 27, 2021, Cardinal Advincula will visit Maricaban in Pasay City and preside at a Mass at the Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted Parish, at 9:00 in the morning.
Cardinal Advincula, 69, is the country’s ninth cardinal, following cardinals Orlando Quevedo, Luis Antonio Tagle, Gaudencio Rosales, Jose Sanchez, Ricardo Vidal, Jaime Sin, Julio Rosales, and Rufino Santos.
On March 25, the pope appointed him as Manila archbishop, succeeding Cardinal Tagle, who now heads the Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
Cardinal Advincula is the 33rd archbishop of Manila.
