Indigenous children, who were displaced by conflict in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao, have finished their studies in the national capital, where they sought sanctuary.
The children of the “Bakwit” (from the word “evacuate”) School in Quezon finished Grade 12 on July 17, 2021, at the University of the Philippines in Quezon City, far from their communities in Mindanao.
The 30 students were the only ones who finished their studies this year after more than 170 Lumad schools were closed since 2017, disenfranchising about 10,000 students. (Photos by Jire Carreon)
