Catholic priest, nuns, health workers arrested in Myanmar, says report

A Catholic priest, several nuns and health workers were arrested by troops loyal to the military junta in Myanmar on Monday morning, November 22, said a report from Radio Veritas Asia.

The report identified the priest as Father Celso Ba Shwe, the diocesan administrator of the Diocese of Loikaw in the country’s Kayah State.

Also arrested were medical doctors and nuns working at the Church-run Karuna Clinic, according to a Dominican priest identified only as Father Dareh by Radio Veritas Asia.

A nun who asked not to be named for security reason was quoted as saying that several religious sisters from various congregations were also arrested.

Another source told Radio Veritas Asia that even some patients at the clinic were also arrested.

The Diocese of Loikaw has currently no bishop after the death of Bishop Stephen Tjephe in December 2020.

The arrest of the religious leaders came less than a week after a former legislator was nabbed by authorities in Yangon for allegedly orchestrating several attacks on junta targets.

Phyoe Zeyar Thaw, who once represented the capital Naypyidaw’s Zabu Thiri township constituency, was taken into custody on Thursday by about 70 soldiers and police officers.

The arrest was featured in pro-military media with photos of Phyoe Zeyar Thaw kneeling in handcuffs with bruises on his face along with a gun and some ammunition.

Authorities also arrested Phyo Zeyar Thaw’s sister Khin Pa Pa Thaw in a raid on her home in Yangon on Friday morning, said a source close to the family.

Youths make up the one of the largest demographic groups targeted for arrest by the military in Yangon, according to Zeyar Lwin, a leader of the Takatha University Alumni Association, in a report on Radio Free Asia.
