Super typhoon Odette’s death toll rises to 389

The death toll from super typhoon “Odette” (international name: Rai), one of the most destructive typhoons to hit the Philippines in recent years, rose to 389 on Monday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced that 11 more people have died in the wake of the typhoon that wreaked havoc in the central and southern part of the country.

The NDRRMC said the death toll has now reached 389, with 52 cases “validated” while 337 were “undergoing confirmation.”

The agency also announced that at least 64 people went missing while 1,146 sustained various injuries.

Power supply in affected areas will likely be fully restored by February 2022, according to the NDRRMC.

Based on NDRRMC’s data, 284 cities and municipalities experienced power outage and interruption. Power supply has already been restored in 154 cities and municipalities, leaving 130 others still in the dark until New Year.

Earlier, UNICEF together with the UN and the humanitarian community appealed for US$107 million to help children and families recover from the impact of the super typhoon.

For the immediate response, UNICEF appealed for at least US$11 million to reach 200,000 most affected children with essential interventions.

“Our hearts go out to typhoon-affected children and families who are spending a bleak holiday season,” said UNICEF Philippines representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov.

UNICEF staff have been working on the ground with the government and other partners to reach the most vulnerable, he said.

“We’re appealing to the international community to continue to play a part in restoring children’s lives,” added Dendevnorov in a statement.
