DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 15 January) – Several local government units (LGUs) in the Davao region canceled classes and work on Wednesday due to “non-stop” rains brought by easterlies and the shear line since Tuesday night.

As of 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that parts of Davao Oriental and Davao Occidental may experience moderate to heavy rains throughout the day.

In response, Mati City, Davao Oriental Mayor Michelle Rabat issued Executive Order 7 series of 2025 suspending all pre-school, elementary, and secondary school classes for the entire day.

Class suspensions were also declared in the Island Garden City of Samal and Panabo City in Davao del Norte; Compostela, Pantukan, Montevista, and Maco towns in Davao de Oro; and San Isidro in Davao Oriental

In Davao Occidental, Gov. Franklin Bautista also declared a province-wide class and work suspension through a memorandum order “to give way for community and local disaster risk reduction and management office and health personnel to prepare for eventualities.”

Davao Occidental is composed of the towns of Malita (capital), Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, Sta. Maria and Sarangani.

As of 7:47 a.m. in Davao City, class suspensions have been declared in barangays Marilog Proper, Sirib, Los Amigos, Callawa, Bayabas, Malambulan, Tagakpan, Salaysay, Biao Guianga, Mandug, Tacunan, Lizada, and Crossing Bayabas.

Light to moderate rainfall was experienced in the city since Tuesday night until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

As of 8:46 a.m., the Talomo River, particularly near Barangay Tugbok Proper, was placed at Code Yellow (alert level that the water level is gradually increasing), according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

The cities of Digos and Tagum have yet to declare class and/or work suspensions as of 10:45 a.m. (Ian Carl Espinosa / MindaNews)
