60 kph speed limit in Opol, Misamis Oriental

The municipality of Opol, Misamis Oriental will implement a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour (kph) following a rash of vehicular and pedestrian accidents along its highway.

Mayor Jay Bago said the ordinance, which was passed by its municipal council last year, will be implemented after the conduct of an awareness campaign about the measure.

The highway of Opol links Cagayan de Oro City, Laguindingan Airport and Iligan City, and is considered one of the busiest roads in Northern Mindanao.

South Cotabato ‘barangay tanod’ chief gunned down

A chief of barangay tanods or village watchmen in T’boli, South Cotabato was killed by gunmen riding on a motorcycle last Friday, January 3, in Tupi town.

Lieutenant Richard Ho, Tupi deputy police chief, said that retired Senior Police Officer 3 Teodorico Bastan, of Barangay Datal Bob, Tboli town, died on the spot after shot with a .45 caliber pistol.

Ho said Bastan was traveling with his wife on a motorcycle when the attack took place in Barangay Simbo, Tupi. The victim’s wife escaped unharmed.

PCG temporarily suspends search and rescue ops for Filipino seafarer

The search and rescue operations for a missing Filipino seaman, who fell from a bulk carrier ship last December 26, has been temporarily suspended, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said last Saturday, January 4.

In a press release, the PCG said that BRP Capones, their fourth “Parola-class” patrol vessel, had to replenish its supplies after a week-long search and rescue operations for 44-year-old Aguaviva Gel Jutba, a deck fitter of the bulk carrier RTM Zheng HE, who fell from the ship as it sailed the waters between Basilan and Sulu.

Jutba was seen standing at the portside of the ship before he fell.
