Man arrested for alleged smuggled cigarettes

Police arrested a suspect who was caught stacking reams of alleged smuggled cigarettes in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur last Sunday, January 5.

Brigadier General Leon Victor Rosete, Police Regional Office – XI director, said that operatives seized 2,500 reams of smuggled cigarettes from the suspect during a police operation in Barangay Astorga.

He said the operation had a different target — a rape suspect — when the operatives saw the suspect with the illicit cigarettes.

P100,000 reward for Zambo cop who killed 2 gunmen

The local government of Zamboanga City would give a P100,000 cash reward for the police officer who killed two gunmen in a shootout in front of the Mount Carmel parish church in Ayala Village on New Year’s Day.

Mayor John Dalipe said the city government would award Police Master Sergeant Ryan Mariano for his “valiant act and bravery” during the gun battle that left the two gunmen dead.

Mariano, a member of the Station Drug Enforcement Team of the Zamboanga City Police Station 9 based in Ayala village, was on duty and their gun battle was caught by a closed-circuit television camera.

2 motorized boats collide off Surigao Sur

Two motorized boats, one filled with tourists, collided last Friday, January 3, in the waters off Cantilan town in Surigao del Sur, prompting local fishermen to launch an operation to rescue them.

In a report, the Philippine Coast Guard substation in Cantilan town said that 23 people were rescued by the fishermen, including the two skippers of the ill-fated boats.
