The San Isidro Labrador Parish church in the town of Pulilan, Bulacan province, has been elevated into a diocesan shrine.
“We happily inform everyone that Bishop Dennis C. Villarojo, D.D. has recognized the parish church as Diocesan Shrine of San Isidro Labrador,” read a parish announcement.
“Let us together thank the Lord God for the blessing,” it added.
The formal declaration of the parish as a diocesan shrine will be held on December 13 at nine o’clock in the morning.
To be a diocesan shrine, a church must be a place of historical significance, prayer, and pilgrimage for a special reason of piety.
It must also exceed other churches in terms of worship, Christian formation, and social services.
When these requirements are met, the parish petitions the bishop to canonically elevate the church.
The Diocese of Malolos said the parish will become the seventh diocesan shrine in the diocese.
It will also be the second shrine in honor of San Isidro Labrador in the Philippines.
The church in Pulilan is a 19th-century Baroque church and is popular for being the site where water buffalos are made to kneel to pay homage to the town’s patron saint.
Like the Saint Augustine Parish from the nearby town of Baliuag, the church is also known for featuring one of the longest Holy Week Processions with at least 110 floats.
