The central Philippine provinces of Leyte and Eastern Samar experienced heavy rains that caused floods as tropical storm “Dante” (Choi-wan) continue to hit the country on Wednesday, June 2.
“There is flood. The ground floor is flooded. There are already evacuees,” said Father Harlem Gozo, social action director of the Diocese of Maasin, in an interview with Radio Veritas 846.
State weather forecaster Pag-asa said that as of 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the center of tropical storm Dante was estimated over the coastal waters of Pola, Oriental Mindoro, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 90 km/h.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the death toll from the storm has climbed to three, with two more persons found dead in Mindanao due to flooding, flashfloods, and landslides.
The council said 158 families or 604 persons were taking shelter in evacuation centers in Davao Region and Soccsksargen. There are 408 families or 2,038 persons who were also affected.
Authorities said 10 road sections and three bridges were not passable due to fallen trees and electric posts and flooding in Central Visayas, Davao, Soccsksargen and Caraga. Parts of these areas also experienced power interruptions.
A total of 1,189 passengers, 113 rolling cargoes and seven vessels were reported to have been stranded in Bicol and Eastern Visayas after sea trips were suspended due to bad weather.
